My Master’s Thesis, entitled: Breathe in for nothing: an interpretative phenomenological analysis exploring the influence of a Pilates warm-up in singers, examined how the Pilates method can be of benefit to singers in particular and musicians in general. This has initiated an interest in further research on the use of the Pilates method’s benefits for singers and musicians. My teaching work has been utilized by individuals hoping to solve their technical issues in a new way, as well as by institutions, for example, the Marvao International Academy of Music, Art and Science in Portugal. Specially designed Pilates programmes take the musician and the impact of the instrument/voice on the body into account. Performance and rehearsal strain take their toll and so the lessons are designed to prepare both the body and the mind for making music and performance.

For singers with remedial issues such as vocal tension dysphonia or stage fright for example, I am able to provide private tuition which combines Pilates with vocal exercises to help to get you singing at your best once more!

Other goals include:

  • Improved joint flexibility and strength

  • Posture stabilisation

  • Reduction of pain and headaches

  • Positive body image

  • Foundation for mind/body communication

Goals

  • Enhance Singing technique by strengthening and stretching the complementary muscles

  • Improve overall physical well being by addressing the muscular imbalances in the body

  • To facilitate performance by creating and enhancing freedom of movement

  • Increased physical and mental relaxation prior to vocalising
